Waterville Golf Links is on every serious golfer's Ireland bucket list. A remote, windswept links on the Ring of Kerry coast, it was a regular stop for Payne Stewart during his time in Europe, and it plays like a course that was designed by the Atlantic itself - natural dunes, blind shots, and fairways that run along the ocean edge. It is approximately 2 hours 45 minutes from Shannon Airport, which makes it a full-day commitment - but every golfer who has made the journey will tell you it is worth every kilometre. Shannon Transfers regularly runs this route for visiting US golfers.
Waterville Golf Links was founded in 1889 and redesigned by Eddie Hackett in 1973, with later additions by Tom Fazio. The course plays to a par 72 and stretches over 7,200 yards from the back tees - long, exposed, and unforgiving in wind. The most famous hole is the par-3 17th, 'Mulcahy's Peak', a long iron shot from an elevated tee to a green perched above Ballinskelligs Bay. Payne Stewart played here regularly during his time in Europe, and his statue stands near the first tee as a tribute.
