Cliffs of Moher vs Wild Atlantic Way: Which Tour is Right for You?

This is one of the questions we hear most often from first-time visitors planning a day tour from Shannon Airport: the Cliffs of Moher, or the Wild Atlantic Way? They are not the same thing - though they overlap - and the right choice depends entirely on what kind of day you want. Here is an honest breakdown from people who have run both, many times.

Cliffs of Moher

What's the Difference?

The Cliffs of Moher are a specific destination - a 14-kilometre stretch of cliffs on the County Clare coast, just under an hour from Shannon Airport. You drive there, walk the cliff path, visit the visitor centre, and drive back. It is a contained, powerful, visually extraordinary experience.

The Wild Atlantic Way is a 2,500-kilometre route that runs the length of Ireland's west coast. When people say 'Wild Atlantic Way tour from Shannon', they usually mean a day exploring the Clare coastline - the Burren, the Cliffs of Moher, the coastal road north toward Black Head and Doolin. It is a more expansive, less concentrated experience.

Choose the Cliffs of Moher

Choose the Cliffs of Moher If...

  • This is your first time in Ireland and you have one day in Clare
  • You want a single, iconic destination that photographs well and impresses in person
  • You are travelling with children or people with limited mobility
  • You have 4 to 5 hours rather than a full day
  • You want to combine with Galway City on the same day
Doolin, Co Clare

Choose the Wild Atlantic Way Route If...

  • You have a full day with no other commitments
  • You are interested in the Burren landscape, Doolin, and the coastal road
  • You have already seen the Cliffs of Moher and want something less crowded

Can You Do Both?

Yes - and many of our customers do. The Cliffs of Moher sit naturally within the Wild Atlantic Way coastal route. A typical combined day: Burren limestone landscape in the morning, Cliffs of Moher for two hours midday, Doolin village for lunch, and the coast road north to Black Head in the afternoon. Your driver knows the timing and will pace the day.

Our Honest Recommendation

If this is your first time in Ireland and you have one free day from Shannon Airport, go to the Cliffs of Moher. They are justifiably famous, they are under an hour away, and the experience lives up to the expectation. On a second or subsequent visit, the Wild Atlantic Way route gives you more variety and a sense of the broader landscape.

If you have two days and want to cover the full Clare coast, Shannon Transfers can build both into a two-day itinerary. Further north, the same coastal route continues through Galway into Connemara, covered by our Connemara private tour.
