The Dingle Peninsula: Ireland’s Most Underrated Day Trip from Shannon

Ask most first-time visitors to Ireland what they want to see and you will hear the same answers: the Cliffs of Moher, the Ring of Kerry, and Galway. The Dingle Peninsula almost never makes the first-timer's list - and that is a mistake this post is here to correct. Dingle is, for our money, the finest peninsula in Ireland. Here is why it should be on your itinerary, and how to get there from Shannon Airport.

Dingle, Co Kerry

What Makes Dingle Different

The Dingle Peninsula is smaller than the Ring of Kerry but more dramatically formed - 50 kilometres of Atlantic-facing headland with a spine of mountains running through the centre. The road around Slea Head, at the western tip, is one of the most spectacular coastal drives in Europe. The views from Conor Pass, the highest mountain road in Ireland, take in both coasts of the peninsula simultaneously on a clear day.

Dingle town is a working fishing port, not a tourist village. The pubs are genuine. The seafood is caught daily. It has not been overwhelmed by the same tourist infrastructure as some better-known destinations, which is exactly what makes it worth going.

Slea Head Drive: The Essential Experience

The Slea Head Drive is a 38-kilometre loop from Dingle town west around the tip of the peninsula and back. Along the route: ancient beehive huts built without mortar around 1,500 years ago; the Blasket Islands viewpoint looking out toward the westernmost islands of Europe; Dunbeg Fort, an Iron Age promontory fort above the Atlantic; and the Gallarus Oratory - a perfectly preserved early Christian church that has stood for over 1,000 years. A 2-hour drive with stops. Your driver will know which pull-offs to use and which viewpoints to prioritise.

Conor Pass on Dingle

Conor Pass

Conor Pass crosses the peninsula at its narrowest point between Dingle town and Tralee. At 456 metres, it is the highest mountain pass in Ireland. The road is narrow and steep - but in a private vehicle with a driver who knows the road, it is a 20-minute highlight of any Dingle day. The view from the top extends over Dingle Bay to the south and Brandon Bay to the north.

How Long Does It Take to Get to Dingle from Shannon?

Approximately 2 hours 30 minutes by road - roughly 170 kilometres via the N18 through Limerick and south into Kerry. It is a long day from Shannon, but entirely manageable as a private tour with an early start. Many customers combine it with a Shannon Airport to Killarney transfer the previous evening, staying overnight in Killarney and doing the Dingle Peninsula as a full day from there - only 1 hour from Killarney.

Dingle vs Ring of Kerry: Which First?

Both deserve a day. If you only have time for one, the Ring of Kerry is more expansive and better known. But many experienced Ireland travellers prefer Dingle - it is less crowded, more raw, and the road at Slea Head is breathtaking. If you have two days in Kerry, do both. Shannon Transfers can arrange both.
